On September 15, 2012, in 放眼大马

Offenders get a second chance at life under 1Azam programme

On September 24, 2012, in In The News
PUTRAJAYA: Under the Akhiri Zaman Miskin (Azam) Tani programme, ex-offenders including former convicts and ex-drug addicts as well as people living with HIV will be assisted to gain financial strength starting next year.

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry deputy minister Datuk Chua Tee Yong said the Government is currently broadening its scope to help single mothers and the disabled in addition to the poor and extreme poor households.

“Starting next year, we will expand the focus groups to include former drug addicts and those released from jail.

“This is to help them get out of their old habits and reintegrate back into society,” he said.
The expansion to include ex-convicts, former drug addicts and people living with HIV was concluded during the GTP Roadmap 2.0 labs as part of the implementation under the Low-Income Households NKRA from 2013 to 2015.

Chua said there was a need to expand the reach of the Azam Tani programme as there were more Malaysians under the low-income category who were not registered under the e-Kasih system.

Eligible applicants under the programme can receive grants up to RM10,000 to purchase the necessary tools for their chosen business sectors like fish rearing cages, manufacturing of fish fries and food manufacturing equipment.

By the end of last year, a total of 7,632 applicants had registered for Azam Tani grants.

Tee Yong: Khalid must address public concerns over issues

Sunday September 23, 2012

LABIS: Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim has a duty to explain issues of public interest, particularly the Talamgate controversy, because he is Mentri Besar by virtue of the Selangor people's support, said MCA Young Professionals Bureau chief Datuk Chua Tee Yong.

Accusing Khalid of having forgotten the ketuanan rakyat concept he used to talk about, Chua said the Mentri Besar now declined to speak up about Talam Corporation Bhd's debt deals.

“Now he is saying that it is too expensive to comment on Talam. He (Khalid) is no longer in the corporate world and he is there as Mentri Besar because of the rakyat's support.

“Therefore, he has a duty to explain the issues at hand,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Questioning Khalid's refusal for a debate with him, Chua said: “If he is of such high standards, and I am very easy to be defeated, then why is he so afraid to debate with me?

“My question is about the policy of the state government, in terms of land valuation.

“The valuation of the two pieces of land that the state government received through the Valuation and Property Services Department (JPPH) is RM113mil.

“But how could the state government accept and acquire them at RM345mil?” he asked, adding that the Talam issue was very serious as the public was concerned about it.

The Mentri Besar, said Chua, should also reveal the cost of KPMG's report on Talam as this, too, involved public funds.

Khalid had also failed to keep his promises to table a White Paper report on the Talam debt recovery exercise and provide an explanation at the state assembly, Chua said.

Besides threatening to sue MCA over the queries on Talam, Chua said Khalid had also asked him to apologise.

“Talam is not my issue. The public is questioning the deals,” he said, adding that Khalid's ability to administer Selangor would be questioned if he could not provide answers to the issue despite being the Mentri Besar.

In July, Chua had questioned how an exercise to recover a RM392mil debt owed by Talam to state-linked companies ended up in questionable deals worth over RM1bil.

The RM1bil deals include Talam assets acquired by the Selangor government at RM676mil to offset the debt and a RM392mil grant obtained by the Mentri Besar Incorporated to facilitate the debt recovery exercise.

LABIS: Singer Nur Shahila Amir Amzah who won the top prize in Asia’s first reality singing contest in Shanghai has helped to build a positive image of Malaysia to the world.

MCA Young Professionals Bureau chief Datuk Chua Tee Yong said he believed Nur Shahila’s ability in mastering three languages and performed them on the international stage made all Malaysians proud.

“I would like to congratulate her for her achievement, it has definitely helped to uphold the good image of the country,” he said at a youth camp at Dataran Labis.

Chua, who is Agriculture and Agro-based Industry deputy minister, commented on three songs in three languages by the 22-year-old emerged as the Asian Wave 2012 champion when she garnered enough votes online to beat contestants from China, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand and India.

Chua said the success story of Nur Shahila, also known as Shila Amzah, had proven the Prime Minister’s focus on encouraging Malaysians to master not only the national language, but also other mother tongues.

“It is important in a bid to increase our competitiveness in the world,” he said.

Chua added that the new education blueprint would set to encourage students to master more than two languages.

Bring on the MB, Chua insists

Monday September 3, 2012

LABIS: Datuk Chua Tee Yong has reiterated that he wants to debate only with Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim on the controversial RM1bil in deals involving Talam Corporation Bhd.

The MCA Young Professionals Bureau chairman said he wanted to debate only with Khalid as he was the person who knew from “A to Z” on the Talam debt restructuring deal.

He said this in response to the invitation by DAP's PJ Utara MP Tony Pua to a one-to-one debate on Talam here this Sunday.

Banners have been hung up in Labis town recently proclaiming that Pua would be in Labis to debate with Chua at Yong Hock Kiong temple.

Chua said his challenge to Khalid for the debate remained open.

I'm still waiting for the mentri besar, who is the head of the state, who knows the Talam debt restructuring deal to debate with me.

I'm only keen to debate with him (Khalid) as he has all the information on Talam,” he told reporters after attending a meet-the-people session and health examination camp organised by the Labis district council at Taman Sri Emas here yesterday.

Chua said Khalid's political secretary Faekah Husin admitted that Pua would have to meet the mentri besar to obtain information on Talam-gate.

So, who knows the deal better? Who is Tony Pua if I'm willing to challenge the mentri besar for debate?” Chua said.

As far as the DAP is concerned, they act as if they know everything but they always give conflicting statements among each other,” he added.

DAP's tactics were “very standard” to blame the previous government, divert attention from the issue, give partial information or conflicting statements as well as to make personal attack, Chua said.

Chua, in recent months, had raised various questions pertaining to the exercise, which he said was to recover RM392mil in debts from Talam but instead had ended in deals worth more than RM1bil.

The state government is said to have acquired land worth RM392mil and bought additional assets for RM248mil from Talam, bringing the total acquisition to RM676mil.

The RM676mil is part of the RM1bil in controversial deals.
