Ministry Hopes For Bigger Budget Allocation For Agri Sector

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- The Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry hopes the agricultural sector will get a bigger allocation under Budget 2012 to be tabled in parliament next month.

Deputy Minister Chua Tee Yong said today the agricultural industry was also linked to national security because the country could face problems without adequate supply of food.

"The additional allocation can step up food production in the country, for example rice, vegetables and fruits," he said when launching a career carnival of the agricultural sector, here.

Commenting on the 0.4 per cent contraction of manpower in the agricultural sector between 2006 and 2010, Chua said the government was implementing various programmes to draw young people to the sector.

One of the initiatives was forging close cooperation with private companies which had a good track record in the agricultural sector, he added.
"The ministry has established collaboration with Asia Aquaculture (M) Sdn Bhd

(CP-Malaysia), a big name in the agricultural sector, to conduct training programmes, supply manpower and offer employment to participants with an attractive starting salary," he said.
Chua said it was hoped that the economic transformation programme in the agricultural sector would be able to draw more people to participate in the sector.

Meanwhile, Deputy Human Resources Minister Senator Datuk Maznah Mazlan said the ministry agreed to help the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry offer an advanced diploma in training skills in the agricultural sector.

The career carnival, organised by the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry

Ministry with the cooperation of the Human Resources Ministry, is held over two days from today at the Putra World Trade Centre.
